Streamline Writing Classes: Class Descriptions

Each class focuses on one mentor text from which we learn fundamental aspects of writing such as, but not limited to, character, plot, setting, imagery and point of view. Focusing on one text throughout the class has two distinct advantages for students: 1) simplicity. There is only one work for you to manage, and 2) in-depth knowledge of the work. Mentor texts are written by masters of the craft of writing. It’s to our benefit that we slow down and listen to what these great writers have to tell us.

Each two hour meeting on Zoom will consist of a short lecture on one aspect of craft from the mentor text, discussion, and focused free-writes guided by customized writing prompts. By the end of any class format, my hope for you is that you’ll have multiple pieces with which to move forward, connections to your peers that will help to sustain your writing practice, and an emerging penchant for more study. Practically, you’ll walk away from class with new learning, a reading list, and writing prompts. For the longer class format students, you’ll receive knowledgeable, written commentary from your instructor about your work and/or extensive feedback from your peers. The price of each class varies*, and does NOT include the price of a mentor text. Students are expected to acquire the mentor text ahead of time from a bookseller of their choice** or a library. The works selected for study are widely available.
